1984
Stephen Sprouse (1953–2004) was a quintessential downtown New York fashion designer known for pioneering the couture-meets-punk, day-glo look of the early ’80s. He dressed Blondie, Madonna, and numerous others. AW was reportedly so taken by his designs that he traded two paintings for his entire collection during his first fashion show in 1984 and invited Sprouse into his inner sanctum. AW was buried in a Sprouse suit.
