One-of-a-kind Polacolor ER shot by Andy Warhol
1984
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was a New York graffiti artist who catapulted to artworld stardom in the early 1980s with his gritty, neo- expressionist paintings. Known as “Samo” in his early tagging days on New York’s Lower East Side, he epitomized the drug fueled bohemian downtown New York scene in the early 1980s. He sought Warhol’s attention for months before dealer Bruno Bischofberger formally introduced the two. They soon became friends and collaborators. Basquiat rented AW's downtown building and dated photographer and interview staffer Paige Powell, with whom AW was also close. Basquiat died of a drug overdose in 1988.
